PLASTIC CHROME
Plastic chrome was used on the dash bezels and armrest bases of many of the domestic cars made in the 1960s and the 1970s. The words "Plastic Chrome" is really a misnomer, the process is really called “Vacuum Metallizing” and it involves vaporizing aluminum in a vacuum chamber which gives the plastic part it’s chrome look. First we chemically strip the part down to the bare plastic, removing all the old vacuum metalizing and the old layers of paint. We then wet-sand the scratches down smooth so they won’t show in the new finish.
After the part has been vacuum metallized the entire piece is chrome and shiny. We then seal the chrome with a top coat of clear. We then mask and paint the housing or part, leaving the chrome ring or chrome area exposed as was original. Any letters are detailed and painted with a stamping machine, the same as used by the factory. Our plastic chrome process is superior to our competitor’s chrome as ours will not wipe off with 409 or Windex and will look great for many years, certainly longer than the original chrome finish. And of course, we guarantee the quality of our work. We can also repair broken or damaged plastic for an additional charge. Please call for specific pricing. |
